Heroic Minnesota Mother Dies Saving Daughter in House Fire

POLICY WIRE — St. Paul, Minnesota — A mother in Minnesota displayed extraordinary bravery by sacrificing her life to save her 3-year-old daughter from a devastating house fire. Bonnie Pierce, 38, perished after rushing back into the blazing duplex to shield her youngest child, Grace, from the flames.

The fire erupted on August 22 while Pierce was napping inside the St. Paul residence. Her 12-year-old daughter, Aurora, managed to escape by breaking an air conditioning unit and climbing through a window, as detailed in a GoFundMe campaign established for the family.

Pierce initially exited the home safely but returned upon realizing that Grace was still inside. Her sister, Jenny McGovern, suggested that Pierce might have thought Aurora had taken Grace with her when she fled.

McGovern praised her sister, stating, She’s a hero. She died a hero. She’s my hero forever. I cannot thank her enough for saving that little girl’s life.

Firefighters faced intense fire, extreme heat, and almost no visibility on the first floor of the East Magnolia Avenue duplex. Interim Saint Paul Fire Chief Gregory Duren revealed that a firefighter discovered an adult female in a bedroom during the search.

Pierce was found unresponsive, and firefighters immediately performed CPR. She had been without oxygen for about 15 minutes and suffered burns over 48 percent of her body, according to the GoFundMe page organized by Jessica Buol. Pierce succumbed to her injuries on August 24.

Grace survived the ordeal and remains hospitalized in critical condition, though she is improving and expected to make a full recovery. At a news conference, Pierce’s mother, Terri Pierce, expressed her grief and admiration for her daughter.

“Bonnie is my hero,” Terri said. I’ve lost my daughter. I love her tremendously. I miss her every day. If I could go to Walmart and buy Bonnie back, I would in a New York minute. I want my baby back. I miss her immensely.

McGovern described her sister as a vibrant and devoted mother to her four daughters and grandson. She touched people’s lives that were in the darkest of dark times and she would give the shirt off her back if they needed it, McGovern said.

The GoFundMe campaign, which aims to raise $100,000, has collected $92,759 from around 1,700 donors. The funds will help cover Grace’s medical expenses and the family’s immediate living costs following this unimaginable tragedy.
