POLICY WIRE — New York, USA — Jessica Pegula, the third-ranked tennis player, managed to overcome her nerves and secured a victory in her opening match at the U.S. Open on Sunday. She defeated Elena-Gabriela Ruse in straight sets.
The 32-year-old American player had a slow start, missing her first nine attempts to break Ruse’s serve. However, she eventually found her rhythm and began to dominate the match.
Pegula, fresh from her runner-up finish at the Cincinnati Open where she lost to Coco Gauff, won 92% of her first-serve points. She concluded the match with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in 83 minutes.
