POLICY WIRE — New York, USA — Former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro declared his unwavering resolve on social media, sharing photographs from the New York prison where he has been detained since his capture by U.S. forces.
Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were apprehended in Caracas during a U.S. military operation in January. They are currently held in a Brooklyn jail, facing drug trafficking and firearms possession charges, which they vehemently deny.
In a message posted on the Telegram messaging service, Maduro stated, I am sending these photos as a small gift to all my grandchildren, to the boys and girls, and to all the good people who love us. He continued, I want you to know that we are standing firm, with our hearts full of your love.
The photographs, taken on June 25, show Maduro in a gray tracksuit, making peace signs. He appears to have lost weight since his capture.
The images surfaced two days after interim President Delcy Rodriguez announced a significant oil agreement with the United States, allowing U.S. operations in Venezuelan oil fields.

Maduro, who lacks access to newspapers or the internet in prison, is permitted to speak with his family and lawyers for about 300 minutes a month, with each call limited to 15 minutes. His son reports that he is in good health and spends his time studying the Bible.
The trial of Maduro and his wife is scheduled to begin on June 1, 2027, in a New York federal court. Both have pleaded not guilty and face potential life sentences if convicted.
