POLICY WIRE — City, Country — Researchers have established a strong connection between a common daily activity and enhanced cognitive abilities. Writing by hand, as opposed to typing on a laptop or smartphone, offers significant mental advantages.
Ramesh Balasubramaniam, a neuroscientist from the University of California, Merced, highlighted the importance of the physical experience of handwriting in a 2024 interview with NPR. The slower pace of handwriting allows for more deliberate thought processing compared to rapid typing.
This deliberate pace encourages reflection and fosters creative and critical thinking, according to experts. Moreover, the physical act of writing characters fortifies neural connections in the brain, which is essential for absorbing new information and forming memories.
Audrey van der Meer, a brain researcher at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, emphasized that typing does not engage the brain in the same way as handwriting. Handwritten notes enable better visualization of concepts and higher performance on conceptual questions, as noted in a study involving 36 university students.
The effort required to hold a pen and control pressure to form letters also plays a role in cognitive enhancement. Sophia Vinci-Booher, an educational neuroscientist at Vanderbilt University, pointed out that each finger must perform distinct actions to create a recognizable letter.

Additionally, the rhythmic and meditative nature of handwriting can reduce stress and lower heart rate, as found in a 2014 study by Chinese researchers. To incorporate more handwriting into daily life, experts suggest carrying a notebook and pen, reading regularly to expand vocabulary, and scheduling daily creative writing sessions.
