POLICY WIRE — City, Country — Dozens of individuals were swiftly removed from Grand Canyon National Park on Saturday as sudden flash floods impacted certain sections of the canyon.

The National Parks Service (NPS) reported that Bright Angel Canyon experienced flash flooding on Saturday afternoon. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. The NPS is currently conducting an aerial evacuation of around 50 people situated in the Phantom Ranch area.

In an announcement via social media, the NPS stated that the entire North Kaibab Trail and Phantom Ranch are closed until further notice. Phantom Ranch, a historic and highly sought-after lodge near the base of the Grand Canyon by Bright Angel Creek, usually has reservations booked months in advance.

Park authorities have urged the public to avoid the closed areas. The lodge’s operator will contact guests regarding the status of their reservations.
