US Condemns Chinese Coast Guard Patrols Near Taiwan as Deeply Destabilizing
The US State Department warns that Chinese maritime patrols east of Taiwan are heightening regional tensions and urges Beijing to end its pressure campaign.
POLICY WIRE — Taipei, Taiwan — The United States government has officially labeled recent Chinese maritime maneuvers off the eastern coast of Taiwan as deeply destabilizing. Officials warn that these actions are actively exacerbating regional tensions.
Randall Schriver, a chair appointed by the US Congress, characterized the ongoing coast guard patrols as a calculated expansion of Beijing’s broader legal, political, and information warfare strategies against Taipei. The US State Department has formally called upon China to cease its persistent pressure campaign and instead pursue the resolution of differences through peaceful dialogue.
The heightened activity follows the first documented sighting of a Chinese militia vessel in these specific waters, which occurred in mid-August 2026. Since June, Beijing—which maintains its claim over Taiwan as its own territory—has significantly increased its presence in the area through regular coast guard deployments.
Most recently, the China Coast Guard confirmed that a formation led by the vessel Xiushan has intensified its patrol operations east of the island. Despite the increased frequency of these missions, Taiwan’s Coast Guard has reported that the Chinese vessels have not breached restricted territorial waters.
