POLICY WIRE — Tripoli, Libya — Al Amin Khalifah Fhimah, who was acquitted in the Lockerbie bombing trial, has died at the age of 70. Libyan Airlines announced his death in a Facebook post and expressed condolences to his family.

Fhimah was one of two Libyan nationals tried for the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, which killed 270 people. He was cleared of all charges in 2001 by a Scottish court sitting in the Netherlands.

The trial, held under unique circumstances due to international sanctions against Libya, concluded with Fhimah’s acquittal and the conviction of his co-accused, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, who died in 2012.

Libyan Airlines’ statement read: “We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Al Amin Khalifah Fhimah on his passing. His life and the circumstances surrounding his trial were a significant part of Libyan history.”
