POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued an urgent public health alert on Friday, linking a recent outbreak of Salmonella and E. coli infections to alfalfa sprouts. The outbreak has now spread across 15 states, resulting in 55 confirmed cases, including four hospitalizations.
“As of the latest update, we are tracking 55 cases nationwide,” a CDC spokesperson stated. “Four individuals have required hospitalization, underscoring the severity of the infections.” The agency did not provide specific details on the identities or locations of those affected, citing privacy concerns.
The CDC has urged consumers to avoid alfalfa sprouts until further notice, pending the identification of the exact source of contamination. Health officials are working with state agencies and food safety authorities to trace the supply chain and pinpoint the origin of the contaminated sprouts.
Symptoms of Salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, typically appearing 12 to 72 hours after exposure. E. coli symptoms can range from mild to severe and include stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. In severe cases, E. coli can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure.
The agency advised anyone who has experienced these symptoms after consuming alfalfa sprouts to seek medical attention immediately. Restaurants and retailers have been cautioned to remove alfalfa sprouts from their inventories until the outbreak is contained.
This development comes amid heightened scrutiny of food safety practices following several high-profile recalls and contamination incidents in recent years. The CDC continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
