POLICY WIRE — Washington, DC — The United States has expanded its sanctions against Cuban entities, targeting an international socialist institute and the country’s construction ministry, according to an announcement by Senator Marco Rubio. The sanctions are part of ongoing efforts to pressure the Cuban government.
Senator Rubio stated, “These sanctions are a clear message that the United States will continue to hold the Cuban regime accountable for its actions.” The targeted entities are now subject to restrictions that limit their access to the US financial system and prohibit American individuals and companies from engaging in transactions with them.
The international socialist institute and the construction ministry were specifically chosen due to their roles in supporting the Cuban government’s policies, which the US deems detrimental to democratic values and human rights.
This move follows a series of previous sanctions imposed by the US on Cuban officials and businesses. The Biden administration has continued to enforce and expand these measures, despite calls from some quarters for a relaxation of the embargo.
The Cuban government has yet to issue an official response to the latest sanctions. However, in the past, it has condemned such measures as an attempt to undermine its sovereignty and interfere in its internal affairs.
