55 Newborn Turtles Perish on Florida Beach Due to Artificial Lighting

Officials from Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring have urged residents to take immediate action to prevent further fatalities.

Residents are advised to close indoor blinds after dark, eliminate visible exterior lights, and report any disoriented hatchlings to a 24-hour hotline. The disorientation caused by artificial lighting is a significant threat to newborn turtles, which instinctively move toward the brightest light source, typically the moon reflecting off the ocean.

“The lights from homes and buildings can confuse the hatchlings, leading them away from the safety of the ocean and toward dangerous areas,” said an official from Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch. “We need the community’s help to ensure these turtles have a chance to survive.”
