Semi-Pro Footballer Jailed for 191mph Motorway Speeding

POLICY WIRE — Leeds, UK — Connor Charlton, a 23-year-old semi-professional footballer, has been sentenced to 12 months in jail after being filmed driving at 191mph on the M1 motorway. The incident occurred on February 15, 2023, when Charlton was captured on camera by West Yorkshire Police.

Charlton was driving a black Audi RS4 when he was clocked at the excessive speed near junction 45 of the M1. He was arrested shortly thereafter and subsequently charged with dangerous driving. During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Charlton had been driving at such high speeds to impress his passengers.

“The defendant showed a blatant disregard for the law and the safety of other road users,” stated Detective Sergeant Ian Cutbill of West Yorkshire Police. “This kind of reckless behavior puts countless lives at risk and will not be tolerated.”

In addition to his jail sentence, Charlton has been banned from driving for 36 months. The court also ordered him to complete 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days upon his release.

The footage of the incident has been widely circulated, prompting a public outcry over the dangers of speeding. Road safety advocates have used the case to highlight the need for stricter enforcement of speed limits and harsher penalties for offenders.
