POLICY WIRE — London, UK — A forthcoming government review will recommend that primary schools in England be mandated to identify children at risk of leaving education at 16 without securing employment. The review, led by Alan Milburn, aims to address Britain’s escalating crisis in youth worklessness through significant changes in education policy and a reform of the benefits system.
Milburn, who’s spearheading the review into the nation’s youth unemployment problem, stated that the recommendations would include sweeping changes designed to better prepare young people for the workforce. “We need to intervene early to ensure that children who are at risk of becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) are identified and supported appropriately,” Milburn said.
The proposed measures are part of a broader strategy to overhaul the current system, which has seen a growing number of young people struggling to find work after leaving school. The review will also examine the role of the benefits system in discouraging employment and suggest reforms to incentivize work.
This initiative follows similar efforts in other countries to tackle youth unemployment. For instance, Denmark has implemented oral essay defenses in schools to combat AI cheating, while South Korea has declared a heatwave a national disaster amid airport disruptions, highlighting the diverse challenges facing young people globally.
