Woman Sues Hospital After Wrong Leg Amputated During Cancer Surgery
Woman sues hospital after wrong leg amputated during cancer treatment. Legal claims and hospital response revealed.
POLICY WIRE — Marietta, Ohio — A 74-year-old woman is suing a hospital after surgeons mistakenly removed the wrong leg during her cancer treatment, leaving her as a double amputee.
The incident occurred in September 2025 at Selby General Hospital, where Sharon Jacks’ lower left leg was amputated instead of her right leg, as planned for her squamous cell carcinoma treatment. Her attorney, Brad Layne, confirmed that the correct leg had been marked pre-surgery, but the wrong one was removed.

Layne stated that multiple medical professionals failed to verify the correct procedure before proceeding, leading to what he called a complete and total failure. The hospital acknowledged that operating room protocols were not followed and has since implemented new safety measures. Jacks is seeking both punitive and compensatory damages from the hospital and surgical team.
