POLICY WIRE — Madison, Wisconsin — Two leaders of an underground University of Wisconsin-Madison fraternity have been charged with hazing after 30 pledges were discovered in a poorly maintained basement, some injured and covered in food and liquids.

The Madison Police Department received an anonymous tip about the event, which took place around 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday in a basement of an off-campus chapter house. The incident involved individuals aged mostly 18, who were found partially dressed and in poor physical condition.

Brayden Klein and Samuel Vane, both 20, face hazing and disorderly conduct charges. The national Alpha Epsilon Pi organization, founded in 1913, had its campus recognition revoked in 2015, but the local chapter continues to operate. The university has launched an internal investigation into those involved.
