POLICY WIRE — Tallahassee, Florida — William Frances Silvia, the 13th inmate executed in Florida this year, was put to death for the murder of his estranged wife, authorities confirmed on Thursday.
Silvia, 58, was executed at Florida State Prison in Raiford after exhausting all appeals. The condemned inmate was pronounced dead at 6:14 PM local time.
The execution marks another step in Florida’s ongoing efforts to enforce capital punishment. Silvia’s final words, as reported by prison officials, were, “I forgive you all.”
Silvia was convicted in 2002 for the murder of his estranged wife, Donna Jean Silvia, who was found dead in her home in Orange County. The crime, which involved severe blunt force trauma, shocked the local community and led to a lengthy legal battle.
The execution comes amid a national debate over the death penalty, with critics arguing for its abolition and proponents citing it as a necessary deterrent for heinous crimes.
Florida has one of the highest numbers of executions in the United States. The state’s stringent application of the death penalty has drawn both praise and criticism from various quarters.
