POLICY WIRE — London, UK — An investigation has been initiated into the conduct of two British Transport Police (BTP) detectives concerning their handling of an investigation into sexual assaults committed by Simon Levy on the London Underground in October 2024. The inquiry will scrutinize alleged failures to adequately progress and supervise the investigation, which may have contributed to the subsequent murders committed by Levy.
The investigation into the detectives’ conduct was confirmed by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). “We have launched an investigation into the actions of two detectives in relation to the handling of a case involving Simon Levy,” stated an IOPC spokesperson. “Our inquiry will focus on whether there were any failings in the investigation that may have impacted the outcome.”
Simon Levy was arrested in October 2024 following multiple reports of sexual assaults on the London Underground. Despite these arrests, Levy was released and went on to commit further, more severe crimes, culminating in multiple murders. The IOPC’s investigation aims to determine whether the detectives’ actions or inactions played a role in these tragic events.
The BTP has cooperated with the IOPC’s investigation, placing the two detectives under investigation on restricted duties. “We take any allegations of misconduct very seriously and are fully cooperating with the IOPC to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation,” a BTP statement read.
The case has drawn significant attention, raising questions about the effectiveness of police investigations into sexual offenses and the protocols in place for handling such cases. The IOPC’s findings are expected to provide critical insights into the matter and potentially lead to reforms within the BTP.
