POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — US President Donald Trump has announced that the Qatari-donated Boeing 747, which has been serving as an interim Air Force One, will undergo extensive upgrades to address security concerns. Trump began using the jumbo jet on July 1 after accepting it as a gift last year. An accelerated effort to renovate the Boeing 747 for presidential use commenced immediately. However, the plane was unexpectedly grounded during a flight from Turkey to the United Kingdom amid escalating hostilities with Iran.
“The aircraft will be maxed out with the latest security features to ensure the highest level of protection for the President,” a White House spokesperson said.
The interim Air Force One was initially intended to serve until the completion of the new Boeing VC-25B, which is slated to enter service in 2024. The upgrades to the Qatari-donated jet are expected to include advanced missile defense systems and other security enhancements.
