POLICY WIRE — Ottawa, Canada — Tensions between the United States and Canada have heightened as President Donald Trump threatened to increase tariffs on automobiles. This move comes in response to Canadian Finance Minister Bill Morneau’s announcement of retaliatory measures against recent US trade actions.
Former Bank of England Governor Mark Carney, now advising the Canadian government on economic matters, sharply criticized Trump’s approach. Carney accused Trump of aiming to “destroy” Canada’s auto industry. He stated that Canada would only consider resuming trade talks if the US demonstrates a “right attitude” towards negotiations.
The escalating trade war has significant implications for both nations’ economies, particularly within the automotive sector, which is a critical component of North American trade. The US auto industry employs millions and contributes substantially to the economy, while Canada’s auto sector is deeply integrated with US supply chains.
Trump’s threat to impose higher tariffs on automobiles follows a series of trade disputes between the two countries. The US has already implemented tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, prompting Canada to respond with its own set of tariffs on US goods.
In a press conference, Carney emphasized the need for a collaborative approach to trade. “We are committed to protecting our industries and workers, but we also believe in the importance of fair and balanced trade relations,” he said. “The current path taken by the US is counterproductive and harmful to both our economies.”

As the situation develops, both countries face the prospect of prolonged economic uncertainty. The automotive industry, in particular, is at risk, with potential job losses and increased costs for consumers on both sides of the border.
