POLICY WIRE — Busan, South Korea — UNESCO has designated a group of ancient sites in Nara prefecture, known as Asuka-Fujiwara: Archaeological sites of Japan’s Ancient Capitals and Related Properties, as World Heritage sites. This marks Japan’s 27th such site.

The decision was made during a meeting of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in Busan, South Korea, on Sunday. The sites are highly regarded for illustrating the formation of Japan’s centralized state.
