POLICY WIRE — Kathmandu, Nepal — A month after catastrophic flooding along the Nepal-China border, families of more than 50 missing Ukrainians are still waiting for answers. The disaster, triggered by a collapsing Himalayan mountain slope, left thousands missing and hundreds dead.

The victims were part of a spiritual retreat group traveling from Tibet to Kathmandu when the flood struck. Among them were Olena Kalynychenko and her partner Oles Visich, who had planned to share chrysanthemum tea made from Chinese flowers upon their return. Kalynychenko’s last known location was at a border post just minutes before the disaster.

Despite efforts by families and authorities, information about the missing remains scarce. Nepali officials have recovered 1,451 bodies, but only 112 have been identified. The process of matching DNA samples with victims is ongoing, and many families have yet to receive any updates.
