Ukraine Drone Strikes Cripple Russian Data Centers and Set Back AI Research
Ukrainian drone strikes target key Russian data centers for Yandex and Sberbank, disrupting digital services and delaying national AI development.
POLICY WIRE — Moscow, Russia — Recent Ukrainian drone strikes have successfully targeted and damaged critical data centers across Russia, knocking out vital infrastructure and severely disrupting essential digital services.
The aerial assaults hit three primary data hubs operated by tech titan Yandex, alongside facilities belonging to major lender Sberbank and social media platform VKontakte. Citizens and enterprises throughout the country quickly reported widespread malfunctions affecting cloud storage, e-commerce platforms, banking networks, and navigation tools.
Industry experts warn that the physical damage sustained by these large server facilities will take months or potentially years to fully resolve. Mikhail Klimarev, head of the Internet Protection Society activist group, noted that the strikes have placed Russia significantly behind in the global artificial intelligence race.
The targeted data centers represent soft targets packed with high-end server hardware, power supply units, and cooling systems. On Oct. 8, a Yandex facility in Sasovo housing two prominent supercomputers was hit, followed by strikes on facilities in Kaluga and Vladimir over subsequent days.
Sberbank’s primary data and AI hub in Balakovo suffered a direct strike on Oct. 14, while a St. Petersburg data center serving VKontakte was struck four days later. Satellite imagery confirms that intense fires sparked by the drone impacts severely damaged delicate electronics, including high-end Nvidia A100 microchips.
Connor Martin, an analyst with the Council for Foreign Relations, emphasized that replacing these advanced American-designed chips will prove exceptionally difficult under existing international sanctions. The combination of hardware shortages and severe infrastructural damage threatens to delay Moscow’s technological ambitions indefinitely.
