POLICY WIRE — London, UK — The UK retail sector continues to face challenges as total footfall declined by 2.1% compared to the previous year, according to the latest data from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and Sensormatic. This marks an improvement from June’s 3.4% drop but indicates that retailers are yet to experience the anticipated ‘Burnham bounce’.
The BRC-Sensormatic data highlights the ongoing difficulties retailers face in attracting shoppers, a situation exacerbated by the recent heatwave. High temperatures have deterred consumers from visiting physical stores, further straining an already fragile retail environment.
Helen Dickinson, BRC Chief Executive, commented on the situation: “While the decline in footfall has eased slightly from June, the figures show that retailers are still struggling to attract customers. The heatwave has undoubtedly played a role in keeping shoppers away, making it difficult for stores to recover.”
The data suggests that the so-called ‘Burnham bounce,’ a term coined to describe the expected increase in consumer spending following the appointment of Andy Burnham as Mayor of Greater Manchester, hasn’t yet materialized. Retailers had hoped that his leadership would stimulate economic activity and boost shopper numbers, but these hopes have yet to be realized.
The retail sector’s challenges are compounded by broader economic factors, including uncertainty around Brexit and rising costs. These issues have created a cautious consumer environment, with shoppers more inclined to cut back on non-essential spending.
In response to these pressures, some retailers are exploring new strategies to attract customers. These include enhancing online shopping experiences, offering more competitive pricing, and improving in-store environments to make them more appealing during warmer weather.
As the summer season progresses, retailers will be closely monitoring footfall data to gauge the effectiveness of their strategies and the impact of external factors such as weather and economic conditions.
