POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — British media watchdog Ofcom announced on Wednesday that persistent worries remain regarding the management of illegal hate speech and terrorism-related material on the social media platform X, owned by Elon Musk.
The regulatory body noted that X successfully met agreed-upon benchmarks for reviewing user-submitted reports of suspicious material more rapidly. However, officials stated that ongoing concerns persist regarding how effectively the platform actually removes illegal terror and hate content.
Ofcom also disclosed new restrictions concerning the Grok AI chatbot and noted that it received mixed feedback regarding the company’s collaboration with external experts. In response to worries from civil society groups that flagged content went unaddressed, X agreed to consult with specialists to refine its reporting systems.
Under the established agreement, X will submit quarterly performance metrics over a 12-month duration to allow the watchdog to measure progress against set targets. Meanwhile, the regulator is evaluating whether the platform has fully met its legal obligations to safeguard individuals in Britain from unlawful material.
Ofcom is actively scrutinizing compliance with illegal content regulations alongside the effectiveness of the platform’s age verification mechanisms. X did not immediately reply to a request for comment regarding the regulatory updates.
