UK PM Accuses Iran of Plotting Attack on US Air Base
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham claims a suspected plot against a U.S. air base in England was likely orchestrated by Iran's Revolutionary Guard.
POLICY WIRE — LONDON, United Kingdom — British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has accused Iran’s Revolutionary Guard of orchestrating a suspected plot to attack a U.S.-run military air base in England, calling it ‘almost certainly’ directed by the Iranian regime.
The alleged plan, uncovered last month, involved seven men arrested near RAF Fairford, an air base used by American bombers. While no explosives were found, police discovered gasoline in vehicles linked to the suspects. Iran has denied involvement, but the U.K. has sanctioned two Iranian officials and increased its security measures.
The incident has prompted condemnation from Western nations, including the U.S., which has labeled Iran’s actions as a threat to global stability. The U.S. has since relocated its bombers from the base, citing the ongoing tensions with Iran. The British government has also warned that hostile states like Iran are using proxies to conduct attacks on their soil, maintaining a veil of plausible deniability.
