A UK man has been sentenced to prison following the seizure of more than 2,000 litres of GBL, known as a 'date rape drug' for causing memory loss.
POLICY WIRE — London, UK — A man has been sentenced to prison after authorities seized more than 2,000 litres of gamma-butyrolactone (GBL), a substance commonly referred to as a ‘date rape drug’ due to its effects, which include memory loss.
The seizure occurred during a routine police operation aimed at curbing the distribution of illegal substances. The defendant, whose identity is withheld pending further legal proceedings, was arrested on charges of possession with intent to supply a controlled substance.
GBL is a central nervous system depressant that can induce euphoria, relaxation, — and lowered inhibitions. However, it’s also notorious for its ability to cause severe memory loss, making it a substance of concern in cases of sexual assault.
