POLICY WIRE — London, UK — Recent data indicates a 43% decrease in small boat crossings across the Channel from January to mid-July 2025 compared to the same period last year. The number of migrants has dropped from 21,690 to 12,469. However, since Andy Burnham assumed office on July 20, there has been a slight uptick in crossings. Between July 20 and August 2, 2025, 1,962 people crossed in small boats, whereas over the same period this year, the number has exceeded 2,000.

The UK government has yet to release an official statement on the recent increase. The data suggests that while the overall strategy may have shown initial success, recent trends could indicate challenges in sustaining the reduction.
