UEFA Relocates Midtjylland Conference League Match Amid Tirana Protests
UEFA moves the FC Midtjylland vs. KF Egnatia Conference League match to Elbasan Arena following ongoing anti-government student protests in Tirana, Albania.
POLICY WIRE — Tirana, Albania — FC Midtjylland’s opening UEFA Conference League match against Albanian club KF Egnatia has been relocated from the Arena Kombetare in Tirana to the Elbasan Arena.
The decision was finalized by UEFA following consultations with local authorities regarding the ongoing civil unrest in the capital. The new venue, Elbasan Arena, is situated approximately a 40-minute drive southeast of Tirana.
The shift in venue comes as student organizers continue to stage anti-government demonstrations. Protesters are voicing concerns over university conditions, rising higher education costs, and a perceived lack of financial support and post-graduation employment opportunities.
This wave of unrest follows months of largely peaceful demonstrations in the country. Previous protests were triggered by plans to develop a luxury resort on Albania’s southern coast, a project involving Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump, which has encountered various legal hurdles.
