U.S. Lawmakers Condemn Foiled Mass Shooting Plot at Illinois Hindu Temple
U.S. leaders denounce a foiled mass shooting plot at an Illinois Hindu temple, calling for urgent action against rising anti-Indian and religious hate.
POLICY WIRE — New York, USA — A wave of condemnation has emerged from top U.S. lawmakers and civil society leaders following a thwarted mass shooting attempt at a Hindu temple in Aurora, Illinois. Authorities arrested 19-year-old Alexandros Paporakis of Palatine on October 11 after he allegedly targeted the Sri Venkateswara Swami (Balaji) Temple.
Officials reported that the attack was averted when the suspect’s rifle malfunctioned outside the facility, prompting him to flee the scene. Paporakis appeared in court on October 14, facing charges of unlawful weapons possession and making a terrorist threat.
Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, who was present at the temple with his family during the incident, expressed his horror at the targeted violence. He described the event as a dangerous manifestation of white supremacy and anti-Indian sentiment, urging officials to address these threats before they result in loss of life.
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and various other representatives, including Brad Sherman, Ami Bera, and Suzan DelBene, issued strong statements against the rise of religious bigotry. They emphasized that all Americans deserve the right to worship without fear and called for enhanced security at minority houses of worship.
Palatine Police Chief William Nord confirmed during an October 15 press conference that the suspect appeared to be acting alone. Investigators are currently analyzing a manifesto recovered from the suspect to determine his motivations and why he selected the October 11 date for the planned assault.
The organization South Asians for America has formally requested that the FBI and the Department of Justice investigate the incident as a federal hate crime. The group noted that this threat occurred during Navaratri celebrations and follows a recent pattern of vandalism targeting Hindu sites across the country.
