Trump Targets Wind Turbine Imports in New Executive Order and Trade Talks
President Trump directs trade officials to negotiate on wind turbine imports, citing national security concerns amid a Section 232 investigation.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, United States — President Donald Trump signed executive actions directing Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to pursue negotiations regarding wind turbine imports and provide updates on their findings.
The administration’s actions follow findings that the United States relies heavily on foreign-produced wind turbine components and subcomponents.
While the directive does not immediately impose new tariffs on turbine imports, it leaves the door open for potential future measures depending on the outcome of the discussions led by Greer and Lutnick.
The federal government is currently investigating the national security implications of importing wind turbines and parts under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.
Import data shows that by June 2025, wind turbine imports surged to nearly $1.4 billion, marking a 97% increase compared to the same period in the prior year.
President Trump has consistently maintained a stance against wind energy and has worked to dismantle Biden-era funding for wind-power infrastructure since taking office.
As part of its broader efforts against wind generation, the administration initiated a Section 232 investigation that could pave the way for tariffs on these goods by the end of 2025 or early 2026.
