Trump Suggests Ukraine Needs New Leadership for Peace Negotiations with Russia
President Donald Trump calls for a change in Ukrainian leadership, suggesting a new negotiator is needed to end the ongoing war with Russia effectively.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, United States — President Donald Trump stated on Monday that a representative other than Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy should lead negotiations to resolve the conflict with Russia.
The President expressed his belief that the current Ukrainian leadership has been hesitant to secure a deal, suggesting that it is time for someone else to step in to facilitate an end to the hostilities.
This marks a continuation of rhetoric from the President, who previously suggested on October 10 that Ukraine should replace its leader. Trump has accused the Ukrainian administration of failing to do enough to bring the war to a close.
Tensions have been further complicated by reports of a diesel supply deal involving Russia. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s foreign minister has defended the President, asserting that he maintains the support of the people.
During a meeting on Friday, the two leaders discussed the possibility of Ukraine ceding territory to Russia. While the topic was raised, sources familiar with the matter indicated that the President ultimately agreed to attempt to end the conflict along the current front lines.
The discussion also touched upon Ukraine’s request for Tomahawk missiles, which Zelenskiy had hoped to secure during his visit to the White House. As of day 1,691 of the war, the President continues to argue that Ukraine has provided nothing in return for U.S. support.
