POLICY WIRE — New York, United States — A truck driver spent over two decades creating a detailed scale model of New York City, featuring more than 800,000 structures. The model, made from balsa wood and foam board, has now become a museum exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York.

The model, which spans 50 feet long and nearly 30 feet wide, includes all five boroughs and parts of New Jersey and Long Island. It features landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, Yankee Stadium, and the Brooklyn Bridge, along with recreations of neighborhoods and personal favorites from the creator’s childhood.

Joe Macken, the truck driver and model builder, began the project in his 40s after moving to upstate New York. His daughter encouraged him to share the model on TikTok, where it gained over 10 million views in a week. The exhibit, titled ‘He Built This City,’ will remain on display through October 12.
