Tragic Shooting in Trenton, New Jersey: 2 Dead, 8 Wounded

POLICY WIRE — Trenton, New Jersey — A fatal shooting has claimed the lives of two individuals and injured eight others in Trenton early Sunday morning, according to local police.

The incident occurred on the 100 block of Locust Street in the Wilbur section of East Trenton around 12:25 a.m. Officers arrived at the scene to find multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

A 33-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man succumbed to their injuries, as stated by the Mercer County prosecutor. The eight other victims, comprising two men and six women aged between 23 and 43, received treatment and have been stabilized.

Initial investigations indicate that several individuals approached a block party and opened fire on a crowd of approximately 100 people. Over 50 spent shell casings were discovered at the scene, and several vehicles were damaged by gunfire.

Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora described the event as a “large, unauthorized adult gathering involving hundreds of people on a residential street” in a Facebook statement. He highlighted the significant public safety risks such gatherings pose.

Mayor Gusciora plans to implement measures to prevent similar events and engage with local residents. He stressed that the focus is not on criminalizing gatherings but on distinguishing between authorized events and unauthorized occupations of residential streets, especially when firearms are involved.

One of the deceased was noted for his recent efforts to reform his life after incarceration. The mayor urged anyone with information or videos related to the shooting to contact law enforcement.

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill expressed condolences on social media and confirmed that Attorney Jennifer Davenport is liaising with local officials. Trenton Councilwoman at Large Jasi Mikae Edwards echoed the mayor\’s call for community assistance in providing law enforcement with answers.

Councilwoman at Large Crystal Feliciano condemned the violence and offered prayers for the victims and their families. The Mercer County Prosecutor\’s Office Homicide Task Force is leading the investigation into the shooting.
