Tom Felton Encourages New ‘Harry Potter’ Child Stars to Embrace the Role

POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy in the original Harry Potter film series, has expressed confidence in the next generation of young actors taking on the role in the upcoming HBO adaptation.

Felton, now 38, recalls his own experience as a 12-year-old cast member alongside Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson. He is currently reprising his role in the Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, but will soon hand over the part to 14-year-old Lox Pratt in the TV reboot.

In an interview with BBC News, Felton emphasized that he is not concerned about the challenges the new cast might face. “You just enjoy it for what it is,” he said, noting that he sees many similarities between himself and the young actor. He also shared advice with Pratt’s mother, encouraging him to be “as cheeky as possible” while maintaining professionalism.

The three lead actors—Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stour, and Arabella Stanton—are set to earn £500,000 each for their roles in the first season, a significant sum compared to the £1 million Daniel Radcliffe received for the first film. However, Radcliffe has spoken openly about the difficulties of growing up in the public eye, highlighting the challenge of defining one’s identity apart from fame.

Harry Potter season one is scheduled to debut on HBO Max on 25 December. The series marks a major step for the young cast, following in the footsteps of the original actors who navigated the pressures of stardom at a young age.
