Thune Boosts Midterm Campaign Efforts as Senate GOP Struggles to Maintain Majority
Senate Majority Leader Thune ramps up campaign stops, aiming to secure GOP majority amid tight races and growing challenges.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, United States — Senate Majority Leader John Thune is planning a series of high-profile visits to key states with competitive Senate races as the Republican Party works to maintain its hold on the upper chamber.
Thune emphasized his willingness to support GOP candidates, stating that he will attend events if they are beneficial. “If it is useful, if I can come in and help you in any way, I will,” he said during an interview in his office near the Senate floor. He also noted that he would step back if his presence was not needed.
The South Dakota senator recently campaigned in Georgia alongside Rep. Mike Collins, who is challenging Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff. Thune also attended fundraising events in New York this week, signaling a more active schedule as the Senate prepares to adjourn. Despite internal criticism from some party members and former President Donald Trump over his stance on the SAVE America Act, Thune remains focused on the general election phase.
Senate Republicans have raised over $500 million through the Senate Leadership Fund and affiliated groups to bolster their campaign efforts. With 53 seats in the chamber, the GOP is working to defend its majority as voter concerns over the Iran conflict and economic issues intensify. Thune described the current political landscape as a jump ball, indicating uncertainty but confidence in the party’s ability to win close races.
