POLICY WIRE — Bangkok, Thailand — On Friday morning, students at Debsirin Nonthaburi School on the outskirts of Bangkok were abruptly thrust into a nightmare scenario when gunfire erupted within their school building.

Fourteen-year-old Khim and her classmates initially dismissed the sound of a single shot as coming from a nearby construction site. However, the noise quickly escalated into a barrage of loud bangs. A teacher swiftly ushered the students into a classroom and confirmed through a messaging group that an active shooter was present in the building.

“I heard multiple gunshots — and felt like we weren’t going to survive,” Khim recounted.

Authorities have yet to release detailed information about the shooter or the number of casualties. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and raised concerns about school safety measures in Thailand.
