Spider-Man: Brand New Day Hits $922M Domestic, Poised to Topple Star Wars Record

POLICY WIRE — New York, USA — Spider-Man: Brand New Day has become the fastest film in U.S. box office history to surpass $900 million in domestic earnings, reaching that milestone in just 36 days—shattering the previous record of 50 days held by 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The Tom Holland–led Marvel-Sony release is projected to add $22 million during the four-day Labor Day weekend, lifting its domestic total to $922 million and bringing it within $14 million of The Force Awakens’ current all-time domestic record of $936 million.

Globally, Brand New Day has now earned $2.33 billion, vaulting past Avatar: The Way of Water ($2.3 billion) to claim the No. 3 spot on the all-time worldwide chart—behind only Avatar ($2.9 billion) and Avengers: Endgame ($2.7 billion).

It joins an elite group of just eight films to clear $2 billion globally, becoming the first Spider-Man title to do so after crossing that threshold in under three weekends. Its predecessor, 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, ended with $1.9 billion.

Critics have hailed the film as a franchise evolution: Clarisse Loughrey of The Independent awarded it four stars, calling it “the best Spider-Man movie in more than 20 years” and praising its narrative maturation and visual revitalization under director Destin Daniel Cretton and cinematographer Brett Pawlak.

Loughrey noted that screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers delivered continuity while Cretton and Pawlak reenergized the series’ aesthetic and emotional scope—calling Brand New Day “a maturation not only of its hero, but of the franchise’s entire vision, too.”

According to The Wrap, Holland earned a $20 million upfront fee for the role and stands to receive at least $80 million more in backend compensation, potentially pushing his total earnings above $100 million once production and distribution costs are recouped.
