Spain’s Socialist Party Leads State Polls Ahead of High-Stakes November Snap Election
Spain's ruling Socialist Party holds a 34% lead in new state polling as Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez prepares for a critical snap election on November 29.
POLICY WIRE — Madrid, Spain — Spain’s governing Socialist Party (PSOE) has surged to a 34% lead in the latest state-run survey, positioning itself well ahead of the opposition People’s Party (PP), which currently tracks at 22.2%.
The findings, released Wednesday by the state-run pollster CIS, arrive as the nation prepares for a snap general election scheduled for November 29. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who has led the country since 2018, initiated the early vote eight months ahead of the scheduled end of the parliamentary term.
The political landscape remains highly contested, with conflicting data emerging from various sources. While the state-run CIS survey favors the Socialists, other polling, such as that from El País, suggests the People’s Party could secure 31.9% of the vote compared to 28.1% for the Socialists.
Additional projections from early October indicated that a coalition between the centre-right People’s Party and the far-right Vox could potentially secure a parliamentary majority. The upcoming election is expected to be heavily influenced by the ongoing national housing crisis.
