Singapore Government Launches Algorithm-Driven Dating Service for Civil Servants
Singapore's GovTech unveils FirstDate, a government-run dating app using Nobel-winning algorithm to match civil servants.
POLICY WIRE — Singapore — Singapore’s Government Technology Agency has introduced a new dating initiative aimed at public-sector employees, leveraging a Nobel Prize-winning algorithm to pair individuals based on compatibility rather than swiping through profiles.
The program, called FirstDate, is designed for civil servants aged 21 to 35 and requires participants to complete an extensive questionnaire covering topics such as exercise habits, sleep schedules, love languages, and even the condition of their bedroom. The data is then processed by the Gale-Shapley Stable Marriage algorithm, which has been used in academic and professional settings for decades.

Unlike traditional dating apps that offer endless options, FirstDate provides one potential match per cycle. Both individuals receive an SMS notification and have 72 hours to decide whether to connect. The initiative, developed during a government hackathon, aims to reduce the stress of online dating by emphasizing values and preferences over superficial choices.
