POLICY WIRE — Bend, Oregon — A violent incident at Silver Rail Elementary on Thursday resulted in at least two hospitalizations and the death of the shooter, according to local law enforcement.
Sheila Miller, a communications manager for the Bend Police Department, confirmed that children are among the victims, though a precise count of those injured remains unconfirmed. Authorities were alerted to gunfire directed at a vehicle outside the school at 12:59 p.m. and arrived on the scene shortly thereafter.
The suspect was neutralized shortly after police arrival, though it remains unclear whether the individual was killed by law enforcement or a bystander. The Bend-La Pine school district placed the facility under lockdown as officers conducted a room-by-room evacuation of the premises.
Located over 100 miles southeast of Portland, Silver Rail Elementary serves students from kindergarten through fifth grade and reported an enrollment of 459 students last year. Miller described the event as a devastating occurrence for the Bend community.
