POLICY WIRE — Washington, United States — A Senate Democrat halted a Republican-backed initiative to pass a bill aimed at shielding American consumers from rising energy costs tied to data centers, despite the measure gaining strong bipartisan backing in the House just a day prior.

The proposed legislation, known as the Ratepayer Protection Act, would require technology firms to cover the expenses of new energy infrastructure for data centers instead of shifting the burden to households. The bill passed the House with overwhelming support, 417 to 3, on Wednesday.

GOP Senator Jon Husted of Ohio attempted to advance the bill through unanimous consent, but Senator Martin Heinrich of New Mexico, the top-ranking Democrat on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, opposed it, claiming it lacks sufficient strength. Heinrich introduced his own proposal, the GRID Savings Act, which he argues would better address energy price concerns and promote cleaner energy practices.
