SEC Leaders Convene to Weigh Potential Expulsion of LSU Amid Eligibility Standoff

This extraordinary measure follows a contentious dispute regarding the university’s intent to include players with NFL experience on its active roster.

On Tuesday, the SEC expanded its ongoing federal lawsuit against the university. The league is seeking a temporary restraining order from a judge to prevent LSU from obstructing or interfering with the upcoming assembly of university presidents and chancellors.

Removing LSU, a founding member of the conference since 1933, would require a two-thirds majority vote from the league’s CEOs. Commissioner Greg Sankey indicated in a legal declaration that the meeting is a serious endeavor, noting that school presidents convened last Friday to discuss the matter.

Sankey stated that the consensus among the presidents is that LSU’s continued presence in the conference conflicts with the league’s core values and principles. He emphasized that this stance remains firm regardless of whether the university ultimately adds the former professional players to its roster.

An official spokesperson for LSU did not provide an immediate response to the situation. The conflict stems from an SEC regulation prohibiting teams from fielding players with prior NFL experience, a rule that a Louisiana court blocked the league from enforcing last Friday.

The court’s decision received strong support from the state’s governor and attorney general. While players Zxavian Harris and Dae’Quan Wright have participated in team practices, they were not on the roster for last Saturday’s 51-10 victory over Clemson. Sankey pointed out that two roster spots remain vacant, suggesting the school may still intend to add them.

In an official statement, the SEC asserted its authority to set competition rules, describing adherence to these standards as a fundamental requirement for membership. The league noted that the current legal filing is essential to protect its ability to govern its members.

Sankey further alleged that conference leadership is concerned that LSU president Wade Rousse and athletic director Verge Ausberry lack sufficient oversight of head coach Lane Kiffin and the football program. He cited a perceived lack of institutional control and the harm caused by the school’s conduct as primary drivers for the meeting.

The commissioner confirmed that the agenda for Thursday’s meeting includes a vote on removing LSU from the conference, irrespective of whether the university decides to abandon its plan to field professional players.
