Saints Honor Katrina Legacy with Punt Block Memories Ahead of Falcons Game
New Orleans Saints recall Hurricane Katrina and Steve Gleason's iconic punt block as they prepare for Monday night game against Falcons.
POLICY WIRE — New Orleans, United States — The New Orleans Saints are preparing to host the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night, using the occasion to reflect on the city’s history and resilience. The team is honoring the memory of Hurricane Katrina and the iconic moment when Steve Gleason blocked a punt that became a symbol of rebirth for the city.
As the Saints (1-2) gear up for their matchup against the Falcons (1-2), they have taken time to educate players about the significance of the Week 3 Monday night game in 2006. That game, played at the Louisiana Superdome, is remembered for Gleason’s punt block, which led to a touchdown and sparked an emotional celebration from fans.
The Superdome, which was used as a shelter during the hurricane, had been damaged and left in disrepair. It took 13 months to repair before it could welcome back fans. The Saints’ coach, Kellen Moore, has shared a video with the team about the storm and the stadium’s reopening, emphasizing the deep connection between the city and the team.
