Russian President Putin Backs Vatican Aid Plan for Civilians in Oleshky
Russian President Vladimir Putin speaks with Pope Leo XIV from the hospital, supporting a Vatican humanitarian initiative to deliver aid in Oleshky.
POLICY WIRE — Moscow, Russia — Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed backing for a Vatican proposal aimed at supplying aid to residents in the Russian-held town of Oleshky.
The diplomatic exchange occurred during a telephone conversation on Friday.
Pope Leo XIV initiated the call from his hospital room on October 16, reaching out to the Kremlin leader while continuing his recovery from lung cancer surgery.
According to the Holy See press office and reports from Corriere della Sera, the pontiff pressed for a formal ceasefire in the southern Ukrainian city.
The Vatican emphasized that the appeal focused on establishing a truce to permit vital food, water, and medical supplies to reach the occupied territory.
The discussion centered heavily on the critical humanitarian conditions currently prevailing in Oleshky, located within Ukraine’s Kherson region.
While the Kremlin confirmed that Putin gave his support to the Vatican’s concepts for assisting non-combatants in the area, official statements outlined the scope of the dialogue.
