Reality TV Hit Married at First Sight UK Cancelled Following Serious Rape Allegations
Channel 4 axes Married at First Sight UK after BBC Panorama exposes sexual assault allegations. Cast members react to the show's sudden cancellation.
POLICY WIRE — London, UK — The popular reality dating series Married at First Sight UK has come to an end after Channel 4 moved to cancel the program following revelations of sexual assault allegations.
The decision follows an investigative report by BBC Panorama in May, which detailed claims from two female participants alleging they were raped during the filming. A third woman, Shona Manderson, also reported a non-consensual sexual act on the show.
All the men accused in these reports have denied any wrongdoing. When the news of the cancellation broke on Thursday morning, several cast members expressed a mixture of profound relief and lingering sadness.
One woman who alleged she was raped on the series told Policy Wire that she was delighted and relieved that future contestants would not have to endure similar experiences. Another survivor who also alleged rape by her on-screen husband described feeling a sense of consuming relief, though she expressed shock that an external review was required for the broadcaster to finally end the show.
Regarding the suggestions made during the review, one survivor dismissed the idea that the show could continue using measures like safe words, panic buttons, or lockable bathrooms, labeling those ideas as absolute insanity.
Shona Manderson, who appeared in the 2023 season, stated that her primary feeling was that their experiences were finally acknowledged. She noted that while speaking out was difficult, the fact that their testimony led to this change made the effort worthwhile.
None of the women involved in the investigation reported being tipped off of the show’s cancellation beforehand, despite two of them participating in the review process.
April Banbury, a participant from the 2022 series, argued the show should have been pulled years ago. Her on-screen husband was previously arrested on suspicion of controlling and coercive behavior, though the investigation was later dropped and he maintained the claims were false.
Other anonymous cast members called for greater accountability, questioning how such an environment was ever allowed to exist. Legal expert Lia Perin, who has represented several participants, noted that while ending the show might stop future harm, it does not answer the questions regarding how previous contestants were treated.
Conversely, some former participants expressed sadness over the program ending. Jay Howard from the 2023 season credited the show with friendships and career opportunities, while Marilyse Corrigan from 2021 looked back on her time with fond memories.
Lara Eyre, who was part of the 2022 series, expressed sympathy for the fans and the staff whose work on the unaired season will never be seen. She remarked that while the show was traumatic, it was a significant part of many people’s lives.
