POLICY WIRE — Madrid, Spain — Intense scrutiny continues to surround Real Madrid‘s internal affairs, particularly concerning the escalating tension between long-serving defender Dani Carvajal and current manager Alvaro Arbeloa.
What initially appeared to be a tactical disagreement within the club has reportedly deepened into a more significant issue. Former Spanish international goalkeeper, Santiago Canizares, has now stepped forward, providing a stark and direct explanation for the ongoing friction.
Carvajal’s Discontent and World Cup Aspirations
Carvajal, a pivotal and senior figure within the squad, is reportedly feeling marginalized and unfairly treated by the management. This alleged sidelining comes at a crucial juncture in his professional career, where every minute on the pitch is vital.
The severity of this situation is amplified by its potential ramifications for his international prospects. With the impending FIFA World Cup, the 34-year-old right-back is keen to maintain his standing for selection in the Spain national team. However, a perceived lack of playing time at the club level could severely jeopardize his chances of representing his country on the global stage. Indeed, squad dynamics can significantly impact a player’s national team opportunities, much like how unexpected events can shift fortunes in other major leagues.

Canizares Alleges Historical ‘Bad Blood’
During an appearance on the popular radio program El Partidazo de COPE, Canizares offered his unique insight into the root causes of the conflict. He pointed to a history of unresolved animosity between the two individuals as the primary driver behind their current strained relationship.
“This tension stems from deep-seated animosity. It was Carvajal who effectively ousted Arbeloa from his position, and that has fostered resentment.”
The former Valencia and Real Madrid shot-stopper elaborated on his theory, suggesting that players often harbor grievances when they are replaced, especially after a successful tenure. “When a player is removed from a team where they have performed well and secured titles, and another individual takes their place, the displaced player inevitably perceives it as unjust and dislikes the circumstances,” Canizares explained.
He continued, “They hold onto that feeling. ‘Who replaced me? Carvajal.’ That is my assessment, and that’s how I interpret the situation.”
Stature vs. Opportunity: A Managerial Dilemma
Canizares further emphasized his belief that Carvajal‘s established standing at the club should have commanded greater trust and opportunities under Arbeloa‘s leadership. This echoes similar debates about player management at top clubs.

“This is precisely what is unfolding at Real Madrid. Given his considerable reputation, Carvajal deserved the chance to showcase his capabilities, but Arbeloa denied him that.”
He concluded his analysis with conviction: “He prevented him from playing and speaks of him in such a manner because he was the one who relegated him to the bench. For me, there is absolutely no doubt whatsoever; it is unequivocally clear.”
