Prime Minister Tusk Vows to Restore Rule of Law Amid Escalating Polish Court Crisis
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk pledges to defend the rule of law as riot police and protesters clash over the suspended Constitutional Tribunal president.
POLICY WIRE — Warsaw, Poland — Prime Minister Donald Tusk delivered a televised address on Saturday evening regarding the intensifying conflict within Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal, asserting that legal principles will ultimately triumph despite the threat of civil unrest.
In a statement shared on the social platform X, Tusk characterized the restoration of the legal order as a fundamental obligation. He noted that the current transition is a challenging and occasionally painful endeavor following what he described as years of lawlessness under the previous Law and Justice administration.
Since Tusk’s coalition assumed power in 2023, the government has prioritized judicial reform and the reestablishment of legal standards. However, these initiatives have faced significant resistance from Nawrocki, an ally of the conservative party who has worked to obstruct the reforms since his election.
The friction centers on the suspension of the president of the Constitutional Tribunal. Swieczkowski is among a group of judges aligned with the right-wing Law and Justice Party who were appointed during their previous tenure in government.
The political standoff has spilled into the streets, with riot police deployed to manage tensions surrounding the nation’s highest court. During a recent overnight rally, authorities detained three protesters while the Polish president continued to express his support for the suspended judge.
