Philippines Summons Chinese Envoy Over ‘Threatening’ Remarks on South China Sea Conflict
The Philippines summoned China's ambassador to protest remarks suggesting Beijing would easily win a conflict, labeling the comments a threat of force.
POLICY WIRE — Manila, Philippines — The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs officially summoned China’s ambassador, Jing Quan, on Monday to lodge a formal protest regarding recent public statements that Manila characterizes as a threat to use force.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro delivered the government’s serious concern and strong objection to the envoy. The diplomatic friction stems from comments made by Ambassador Jing on October 15, in which he suggested that Beijing would “easily win” in a potential confrontation with the Philippines.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. previously addressed the controversy on Friday, describing the ambassador’s rhetoric as a thinly veiled threat and an inappropriate stance for a diplomat to take. The incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing territorial tensions between the two nations regarding the South China Sea.
Calls for the ambassador’s expulsion have emerged following the remarks, which have drawn widespread criticism within the Philippines. The government continues to maintain its opposition to any language implying the use of force in the maritime dispute.
