Philippine Senate Approves Withdrawal of Key Impeachment Charges Against VP Duterte
Senate approves prosecutors dropping most charges against VP Sara Duterte, leaving unexplained wealth as sole basis for impeachment trial.
POLICY WIRE — Manila, Philippines — The Philippine Senate, acting as an impeachment court, has approved the withdrawal of most charges against Vice President Sara Duterte, marking a significant shift in the ongoing legal proceedings against her.
The House of Representatives prosecution panel announced on Tuesday that it would drop three of the four articles of impeachment, retaining only Article II, which alleges unexplained wealth and failure to properly declare assets. This decision leaves the case centered on allegations of financial misconduct rather than broader corruption or abuse of power claims.
Lead prosecutor Gerville Luistro confirmed the move, stating that the prosecution will now focus solely on the charge of unexplained wealth, which could impact Duterte’s future political ambitions, including her potential bid for the presidency in 2028.
