POLICY WIRE — London, UK — Parents have reported to BBC Panorama that the agency responsible for securing financial support for children following separation or divorce is causing them severe distress. The Child Maintenance Service (CMS) has been criticized for its inefficiency and the emotional toll it is taking on families.
According to the BBC investigation, many parents are being driven to breaking point as they struggle to receive the financial support they are entitled to. Some parents have resorted to using food banks to make ends meet while waiting for the CMS to process their cases.
One parent, who chose to remain anonymous, told BBC Panorama: “I used food banks while my ex owed thousands in child maintenance. it is a stressful and humiliating situation to be in.” Another parent expressed frustration with the lengthy delays, stating: “The system is broken. it is taking months, if not years, to get any sort of resolution.”
The CMS was established to ensure that children receive financial support from both parents after separation. However, the BBC investigation suggests that the service is failing to meet its objectives, leaving many families in financial hardship.
A spokesperson for the CMS responded to the allegations, stating: “We understand the challenges faced by parents and are committed to improving our services. We are working on initiatives to reduce waiting times and enhance the support we provide.”
The investigation has sparked calls for a review of the CMS’s operations and for increased funding to address the backlog of cases. Campaigners argue that the current system is not fit for purpose and that urgent action is needed to support vulnerable families.
