Pakistan has once again shown the world its ability to handle complex international crises with calm and balance. The recent 12-day war between Iran and Israel put the entire Middle East on edge, and countries across the region faced pressure to take sides. For Pakistan, the situation was especially sensitive. On the one hand, Iran is the fellow Muslim nation, which has long historical, religious, and economic connections with Pakistan. United States on the other hand has been one of the largest global partners with Pakistan particularly in security and defense. The example explored by Pakistan is to act wisely and responsibly, i.e. to stand up on the side of peace, appeal to restraint and not to take any steps that would have contributed to the aggravation of the conflict.
The cautious stance taken by Pakistan might have been disliked by some at home or abroad but it was a show of leadership. There were protests even within the government where they accused the government of failing to stand more firmly with Iran. Such critics reasoned that Pakistan ought to have come out clean and condemned Israel and the United States. Nevertheless, this was not as easy as that. Pakistan has its national interests to look after and any hasty action would have caused some major problem. Iran is already under pressure of international sanctions and internal pressures. The larger war in which Iran is involved may have spilt over to Pakistan particularly because Pakistan has a significant population of the Shia Muslims- estimated at about 15 to 20 percent of the total population. An uprising next door would stoke sectarian fires within Pakistan and put the region in even more turmoil than before.
This prompted the civilian and military leaders of Pakistan to make wise decisions. They provided Iran with the symbolic and rhetoric support to please the opinion of the people but did not engage in the conflict. Meanwhile, they left the door open in case they wanted to discuss things with the United States and proved that Pakistan is a matured actor in the world systems. The foreign policy of Pakistan is the story of a balance and this scenario demonstrated that it does know how to be on the tightrope between the major powers without losing its foot.
Pakistan as a matter of fact has the history of handling hard alliances. In the event of the U.S. war in Afghanistan, Pakistan provided the flyways and airbases of the American soldiers, supporting them throughout more than 20 years. Meanwhile, Pakistan remained in communication with Afghan organizations, such as the Taliban, so that it did not lose its role in the case of the withdrawal of the U.S. This was a two track policy, which was not easy but worked. It made Pakistan relevant in the international arena and ensured that its interests were safeguarded even in a controversial and uncertain case.
Since the recent election of Donald Trump as the President of the United States, Pakistan has an opportunity to restore the stronger bond with the nation. Trump has taken a different route with Pakistan, and it has not been preaching on democracy or following human rights but rather working together and gaining interest. Pakistan even has put his name in the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize nomination due to his contribution towards termination of war between Iran and Israel. This was an unprecedented step which demonstrated the interest of Pakistan to be a responsible and participating party towards peace, even in places which it does not directly have to intervene.
The circumstance that Trump hosted a personal lunch with the army chief of Pakistan, Field Marshal Asim Munir, in the pentagon following the conflict between India and Pakistan in May, is indicative of how significant Pakistan has been in the American security calculative strategies. At least in this aspect, the U.S. is returning to Pakistan as regional partner, given that the Middle East and Central Asia seem to grow tense. Not only is Pakistan one of the largest forces in the Muslim world (military ranks exceed half a million active officers), it is also well-trained and combat-experienced. Pakistan also is the only Muslim state that possesses nuclear arms and so achieves the special place in the world safety.
The location of Pakistan is also an added asset. It is located in a position of South Asia, Central Asia, and Middle East. It is a main trade, energy and security player as it borders China, Iran, Afghanistan and India. Pakistan has something that can be of interest to both of the world powers that compete in controlling the influence on the globe U.S. and China. It is a component of China Belt and Road Initiative under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), but it also wishes to keep a cordial relationship with the West. This even-handed policy places Pakistan in a better position to flex its muscles in world politics.
On a domestic level also Pakistan acted in a self-restricted manner during war between Iran and Israel thus preventing a polarization of opinion. Other countries in the region had protests or even a crisis in their diplomatic relations but this did not happen to Pakistan. Its leaders realized that loud declarations can seem to sound right, immediately but clever diplomacy is what keeps the country safe, in the long run. They used to hear the emotions of people but the decisions were made dependent on the long-term interest of the country.
People will criticize that Pakistan has not done enough to ensure that the situation is under control but the reality is that Pakistan has done precisely what was required. It was a country that preached the sounds of peace, evaded war and had a living relationship with both Iran and U.S. This way, it safeguarded its citizens, maintained its global relations and yet one more time demonstrated that it is a nation which knows how to handle a awkward decision.
Pakistan was a voice of reason in a land of chaos and confrontation. It demonstrated to the world that being an accountable power implies knowing how not to talk, knowing when to intervene, and when to wait. Pakistan remained grounded in preservation of stability, peace and national interests at a stage when other people would have been busy taking sides. This is not stupidity- this is wisdom.
